Whether it’s coming to Breakfast Club, joining with your class for lunch or staying at school for ‘tea’, we all know the joy that comes with gathering together over delicious home-cooked food and, at Yarrells, we take the greatest of care to ensure that the food prepared by our team in the kitchen is enticing, nutritious and filling.
All food for break times and snack times is provided by the school. The children are able to choose from a wide selection of fruit each day, along with plain biscuits in the morning and sandwiches in the afternoon in Greenwood. Water and milk is offered to the children, and those with dietary requirements will also be provided for.
Children in the early years are provided with their lunch already prepared on a plate so that appropriate care can be given when eating. We cater for all dietary requirements and religious observations. When the children reach Reception, they begin to make more free choice, adding accompaniments to their meal such as cucumber, carrot, pasta sauces and yoghurt toppings.
Children in Years 1-6 choose from a buffet bar of options for lunch each day. Two hot options are provided as a minimum: Monday is ‘meat-free’, but on all other days there is a meat and a vegetarian option. In addition, baked potatoes with a variety of toppings are offered each day as is salad, ham, tuna and cheese. Fruit and yoghurt are offered every day, and delicious puddings twice or three times a week.
We often celebrate international days through the cuisine we offer and we’re always keen to celebrate children’s birthdays, too!
The pupil Health and Safety Committee meets twice a term and part of their remit is to discuss the quality and nutritional value of the food, perhaps making suggestions for change that have come through their class reps to the catering team. We make sure we are child-centric in our approach to food, but equally committed to providing healthy, nutritious and taste extending options for the children.
After school, if a child is staying for a club or to complete their homework, tea is offered which, depending on the season, ranges from hot muffins and crumpets to sandwiches and sorbet - delicious!
